How Jet Lag Works

Jet lag occurs when your body's internal clock (circadian rhythm) is out of sync with the local time at your destination. Your body naturally adjusts at a rate of about 1–1.5 hours per day when traveling east, and slightly faster (1.5–2 hours per day) when traveling west.

Eastward travel is generally harder because you're shortening your day, which goes against your body's natural tendency to extend its cycle. Flying from New York to London (5 time zones east) typically causes more disruption than flying from London to New York.

Age also plays a role — older travelers tend to experience more severe jet lag and take longer to recover.
